Colombia plans to start exporting mangoes to the United States in a maximum period of 3 months.

This was achieved after a 2-year work between the Ministry of Agriculture, ICA and Animals and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the US, in the negotiation of protocols and development of the Sanitary Diplomacy plan promoted by the National Government.

Deyanira Barrero León, general manager of the ICA, stressed that they gave immediate technical responses to the requirements of APHIS, which speeded up the publication for international consultation by the World Trade Organization (WTO), about the access of Colombian fresh mango to the US market under 2 options: one is with hot water hydrothermal treatment and the second is irradiation at destination. This favors the Colombian mango reaching that market in the shortest term: in 2 or 3 months the first shipment of the fruit would be made.

Today, the ICA has more than 100 farms authorized for mango exports, with an area of 2,020 hectares dedicated to export.

The sugar mango variety is recognized in the world for its quality and taste. Among the mango varieties grown in Colombia predominate Hilacha (39 %), Tommy (20 %), Keitt (10 %), Yulima (10 %) and Mango de Azúcar (5 %), according to the producers consulted.
