Forecast fall in the volume of oranges exported by Egypt

World trade has been disrupted by attacks on commercial vessels near the Bab al-Mandab strait, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.  Shipping companies prefer their ships to take longer routes, bypassing Africa via the Cape of Good Hope, which increases the journey time by an average of 2 weeks.
According to a Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) report issued by the USDA, the situation in the Red Sea and difficulties in accessing certain key markets, mainly in Asia, are expected to reduce Egyptian orange exports during the 2023/24 marketing year (October to September).
The report forecasts that Egyptian orange exports will reach only 1.75 million tonnes in the 2023/24 marketing year, around 250,000 tonnes less than originally forecast.
In the 2022/23 season, Egyptian orange exports reached 126 countries. The main destinations were the Netherlands, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Bangladesh, Syria, China and the United Kingdom.
